BONDAGE + BANDAGE

2023 SENIOR COLLECTION

This collection entitled ‘Bondage + Bandage’ aims to take a look at the duality found in the ways we attempt to protect ourselves. As humans, each of us carries certain fears and grievances as we go about our lives, some more obvious than others. In this collection, the metaphor of a wound wrapped in bandage is used to represent these emotions and how we suppress them, but much like a wound that isn’t allowed to see the light of day, it only continues to fester.

This symbolism is translated into the garments through harnessing and corsetry, representing the walls we put up to safeguard ourselves, that in the end, only serve to restrain us. The simplistic but tailored black garments layered underneath represent the subconscious self and the emotions that wait just beneath the surface of our defenses. This collection was not only symbolic of this interlacing between my own conscious and subconscious self, but a therapeutic process in uniting them and becoming whole again.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in SCAD’s annual fashion show. This experience provided me and so many other students the opportunity to take our designs to the runway and see them on the “big stage”.
